While the ‘back end’ of business transactions (think of complex ERP integrations and legal watertightness) is still complex, the ‘front end’ has changed beyond recognition.

We are in the middle of the B2C-ification of B2B. But what does this mean in concrete terms for your growth strategy?

The new decision-maker: millennials at the helm

The shift is driven by a change of generation. Millennials and Gen Z now hold the majority of positions in buying teams. For them, there is no dividing line between their private life as a consumer and their professional role.

Anyone who orders a pair of shoes online with one click in the evening no longer accepts at the office the next morning that three phone calls and a PDF quote are needed for a simple repeat order. Back in 2020, Gartner predicted that by 2025 as much as 80% of all B2B sales interactions would take place through digital channels.

The figures: why digital is the standard

The modern B2B buyer has become a ‘ghost shopper’. They prefer to do the preliminary research themselves, without talking to a salesperson straight away.

Self-service as a requirement: Research by McKinsey shows that two thirds of B2B buyers now prefer digital self-service to human contact in the orientation phase.

The 17% rule: Data from Gartner shows that a buying group spends on average only 17% of its total buying time in meetings with potential suppliers. The rest of the time goes to independent research.

The three pillars of the B2C experience in B2B

1. Hyper-personalisation (the Amazon effect)

Generic mailings and standard presentations no longer work. Successful B2B companies use data to deliver content that fits seamlessly with the specific stage of the customer journey. If a lead looks at an ROI calculator three times, your system should recognise that and offer relevant case studies before the first question has even been asked.

2. Emotional value and peace of mind

We often think B2B is purely rational. Nothing could be further from the truth. Bain & Company found that ‘subjective values’, such as enhancing the buyer’s reputation or reducing the fear of failure, often weigh more heavily than the lowest price. A flawless digital interface radiates reliability and professionalism, which lowers the emotional threshold to sign.

3. The omnichannel flow

A buyer starts their search on a smartphone on the train, compares specifications on a desktop and then wants an immediate answer to a technical question via chat. If these channels do not talk to each other, you lose the customer. The experience has to be frictionless, whatever the device.

Conclusion: the gap has closed

The complexity of B2B lies in the contracts and the decision-makers at the back end, but the experience at the front end has to be as simple as ordering a pizza. Organisations that integrate these B2C standards (speed, transparency and personalisation) into their sales process build an unbeatable competitive advantage.

The question is not whether you should go along with the B2C-ification, but how quickly you can catch up.

The classic image of B2B sales, with long lunches, thick catalogues and years of personal relationship as the only foundation, is crumbling at high speed.
